Smith County, named in honor of Major Nathan Smith, of the Second Colorado Cavalry, who
was killed at the battle of the Blue, is on the northern tier of counties, bordering on Nebraska
on the north, and is the sixth east of the Colorado and Kansas dividing lines.1
Organized in 1872. County seat Smith Center. In memory of Nathan Smith, Major of Second
Colorado Volunteers, killed October 23, 1864, at the battle of the Little Blue, Mo.2
