What
are the archives?
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists
organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide
a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would
be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that
even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located
in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to
coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the
web page. The Louisiana GenWeb Project is an extension of the KY GenWeb Project.

How do I submit records to the archives?
Guidelines for Submitting Files to the LAGenWeb Archives
By Darnell
Marie Brunner Beck
Files for the LaGenWeb Archives can be sent as an attachment
or in the body of an email message.
Attachments should be saved as an Text
File with a ".txt" extension. Except when doing the indexes with Colleen, these
should be in excel. Email Colleen for
the example on how it should be typed. All other files such as obits, certificates
and other files should be sent to Dee
I use MsWorks, Wordpad, Notepad, Word and Excel. So I can receive all
these files. Make sure your files have the following...

COPYRIGHT: We cannot use anything that is still under
copy right with out the permission of the one who holds it. All government generated
material is public domain and can be used. This would be census records, court
house records, war records, etc. Also most of the wonderful old books that were
written around the turn of the last century are now public domain. There are many
sites on the internet explaining copy right laws much better than I can. Another
site for some help is: USGenWeb Tips for Text File Presentation Information on

How do the archives differ from the parish pages?
The archives pages contain records only. Archives pages are
where all records for a particular parish are stored. The parish pages contain
links to all other sources where information can be found pertaining to your research.
Top
What if I cannot find my relative(s)?
The archivist's (me) primary responsibility is to obtain records and post them
to the USGENWEB server for viewing. This includes formatting all records according
to guidelines and making sure that the website is very helpful and informative.
I DO NOT DO LOOKUPS OR RESEARCH, (I do Obits only), NOR CAN I ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS
THAT DO NOT RELATE TO ITEMS THAT ARE IN THE ARCHIVES. Please visit the Orleans
Parish Page for help in this area, or check the New
Orleans Public Library's Genealogy Guide.

Steps
to save Mr SID files to hard drive using Win98 ...
Thanks
Harold Wilkinson <roywfgs@cox.net>
For other versions
of Windows, a variation of these steps can be used -- just know how to have open
two Window Explorer windows, and MS Internet Explorer, and how to switch between
the three programs displays.
**For those using dial up modems
to access the Internet, the following steps can be completed before trying to
get on line**
-
Open Windows Explorer.
-
Using the left slide bar, find and left double-click the folder:
Windows\Temporary Internet Files [the right window will display a bunch of "cookie"
files].
-
Change the size of the Exploring window
so that it only takes up less than half of your desktop display area.
-
For a second time, Open Windows Explorer.
-
Within this new Exploring window, and using its left slide
bar, create and/or find folder you want the saved MrSID files to be placed [example:
GenData\LA\Census\1850\Orleans].
-
Change the
size of the Exploring window so that it only takes up less than half of your desktop
display area, next adjust the two(2) Exploring windows so
that you can see
both on your desktop screen [depending on screen size they can be shared left
and right or top and bottom.
-
Open MS Internet
Explorer [ensure that you keep this program opened until you've finished all steps].
-
Under the Tools pull-down menu, select Internet Options.
-
On the General tab, find and select the Delete Files button
within the Temporary Internet Files section.
-
Select Delete all offline content, then select the Ok button.
-
Select the Ok button to close the Internet Options window.
-
Using MS Internet
Explorer, Go to http://ancestry.com/
-
Login.
-
Select the Search tab.
-
Select
Images Online [link - View scanned images of original historical documents].
-
Select the desired U.S. Census [example - 1850 U.S. Census].
-
Select desired State [example - Louisiana].
-
Select
desired County [Parish] [example - Orleans].
- Select desired Township
[example - New Orleans, Municipality 1, Ward 1].
-
At
bottom of MrSID image, ensure that the option "Switch to Browse Mode"
is displayed [if "Switch to Detail Mode" appears, then select the "Switch
to Detail Mode" option until the option "Switch to Browse Mode"
is displayed].
-
Also at bottom of MrSID image,
select the option "View Full Screen".
-
To
ensure that you can find the MrSID file within your Temporary Internet Files,
switch to the first Window Explorer.
-
a. Press
and hold the 'ALT' key, then press and hold the 'TAB' key [a small window will
appear that show the different programs that you have open], next, while continuing
to hold the 'ALT' key down, release and press the 'TAB' key until the "Exploring
- Temporary Internet Files" folder is highlighted.
-
b. Once the desired folder is highlighted, release both 'ALT' and 'TAB' keys.
- Press
the function key 'F5' at the top of your keyboard to refresh the
Window Explorer
display. - Within this Exploring window, and using the right slide bar,
find the filename that ends with .sid&oif=sid [in our example the full file
name will be: LAM432_235-0003.sid&oif=sid] BTW, there will be other files
that start with the same LAM432_235-0003, however, those are used by MrSID to
display the Images on your computer - ignore them - what you want to find is the
file that ends with .sid&oif=sid
-
Now switch back
to MS Internet Explorer, so that you can download your desired images.
-
a. Press and hold the 'ALT' key, then press and hold the
'TAB' key [a small window will appear that show the different programs that you
have open], next, while continuing to hold the 'ALT' key down, release and press
the 'TAB' key until the "Ancestry.com - Images Online Viewer - Microsoft
I" folder is highlighted.
-
b. Once the desired
folder is highlighted, release both 'ALT' and 'TAB' keys.
-
Within MS Internet Explorer, and using the "Go to Image"
options at the top of the window [in our example: < Go to Image 1 of 91 >
is displayed], select the next arrow ">" to view the second Image.
-
Once the second Image is loaded [Make sure each images is fully
loaded before continue with this step], select the next arrow ">"
to view the third Image -- Continue selecting the next arrow ">"
until you have viewed 12-to-15 images [All available images -- in our example
91 images -- can be viewed before continuing; however, too many images may cause
confusion during transferring them to your hard drive. Once you are comfortable
with these procedures, work at your best pace].
-
To start saving the
MrSID file(s) within your Temporary Internet Files to your hard drive, switch
to the first Window Explorer.
-
a. Press and hold
the 'ALT' key, then press and hold the 'TAB' key [a small window will appear that
show the different programs that you have open], next, while continuing to hold
the 'ALT' key down, release and press the 'TAB' key until the "Exploring
- Temporary Internet Files" folder is highlighted.
-
b. Once the desired folder is highlighted, release both 'ALT' and 'TAB' keys.
-
Press the function key "F5" at the top of your keyboard
to refresh the Window Explorer display.
-
Now open
the second Explorer Window that displayed the folder where you want to save these
files
-
a. Press and hold the 'ALT' key, then
press and hold the 'TAB' key [a small window will appear that show the different
programs that you have open], next, while continuing to hold the 'ALT' key down,
release and press the 'TAB' key until the "Exploring - GenData\LA\Census\1850\Orleans"
folder is highlighted.
-
b. Once the desired folder
is highlighted, release both 'ALT' and 'TAB' keys [Adjust the windows sizes and
positions so that you can view both on your desktop screen - no over lapping].
-
Within the "Temporary Internet Files" folder of the
first Exploring window and using the right slide bar, find the filename(s) that
ends with .sid&oif=sid [in our example - the full filenames are: LAM432_235-0003.sid&oif=sid
-thru- LAM432_235-0017.sid&oif=sid].
-
Select
the desired file by right-clicking the filename [example: LAM432_235-0003.sid&oif=sid],
then left click Properties option.
-
Copy its filename
to clipboard so you can rename the desired file in step [36].
-
a. Within the General tab (near the top of the tab), highlight by left clicking
and dragging over only that portion of the displayed description name which you
will use as its new filename on your hard drive [example: LAM432_235-0003.sid
-- remember to stop after the .sid extension].
-
b. Once highlighted, press and hold the 'CTRL' key while pressing the 'C' key
one time to copy and save the highlighted info onto your clipboard, then release
the 'CTRL' key.
-
Press the 'ESC' key
to close the Properties window.
-
After placing
the cursor again over the desired filename within the "Temporary Internet
Files" folder of the first Exploring window, press and hold the left mouse
button, then drag the desired file over to the second Exploring window and into
the desired folder's right side display window, release the left mouse button
to copy the file there.
-
Again in the second Exploring
window, Right-click the filename [image . . .] and select Rename option, then
press and hold the 'CTRL' key while pressing the 'V' key one time to paste the
name on your clipboard into the filename, next release the 'CTRL' key.
-
Repeat steps 32 -thru- 36 until you've copied and renamed all
of the files you have within your "Temporary Internet Files" folder
to your desired folder on your hard drive.
- - - - -
Once the files are saved to your
hard drive, you can view them just as if they were available On Line by:
-
Open Window Explorer.
-
Using its left slide bar, find and left double-click the folder you saved the
MrSID files [example: GenData\LA\Census\1850\Orleans] -- the right window will
display your desired files.
-
Left double-click
a desired filename -- MS Window Explorer will display the desired image and normal
MrSID zooming and panning functions are available, to include, printing from within
MS Window Explorer.
