Bedridden and weary, he died in his home in the loving arms of his wife and daughter. In his last days, he held on to the qualities that defined him, strength of character and gentle lovingness - the same traits that endeared him to those he knew and who knew him. Lucid and loving, Leo charmed with kindness, humor, compassion, humility and love of song. Though he lived his final years with a dangerously enlarged heart, for Leo it was simply a metaphor for the grand scope of his generosity. Born in Torre del Lago, Italy, Leo was raised by his mother and paternal grandparents. His father, who had immigrated to America, desperate to support his family, returned for him and his mother when Leo was 12. He would work side- by-side with his father while attending school to learn the skills that helped him successfully farm crops in the Delta. With his father, he would create A. Volpi and Son, Inc., a prosperous family farm operation specializing in asparagus production for more than 65 years. Leo attended Stockton High School, where, at 18, he met Eva, the great love of his life. Falling in love at first sight, they would be loyal to the values of hard work and family commitment and share their passion for singing, trips to Tuscany, and all that is Italian - large tables shared with friends, fine food, good conversation and storytelling. And always, the singing. Leo Nelio Volpi is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Eva Volpi; beloved daughters, Nancee Volpi of Stockton and Vivian Pasquinucci of Italy; and his beloved grandson, Antonio Pasquinucci of Italty. He will be greatly missed by his friends and relatives here and his native Italy. His beloved grandson, Giovanni Pasquinucci, and his beloved parents, Alfido and Venturina Volpi, preceded him in death. Those who knew him best attribute his accelerated aging to his grandson's accidental death 15 years ago.
