Chargin May 1, 1916 - August 3, 2004 Anthony J. Chargin, 88 years young, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at home surrounded in his final days by his devoted children, grandchildren, his dearly beloved sister Evie, brother Bob, sister-in-law, Judge Ann Chargin and close friends. They all reminisced until the final moments about the rich life they had all enjoyed with him. Tony was born to Nick and Katie Chargin, who were Croatian immigrants and restaurateurs in Santa Clara County. Tony wanted to be a restaurateur as well, but due to the strong urging of his father, Tony, who started school not speaking English, persevered in his education. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in San Jose and went on to Hastings College of Law following graduation from Santa Clara University. Tony started his exemplary career in law as a San Joaquin County Deputy D.A. He was appointed San Joaquin County's first Public Defender, and later gained eminence in private practice as one of the State's finest trial attorneys. Tony retired from the active practice of law after 63 years. He served as President of the Sacramento Chapter of ABOTA (the American Board of Trial Advocates) in 1968. His passion for life was infectious, whether it was his most recent trial, a celebration, a fine cooked meal or a ball game. His wishes were to be buried with the ashes of his devoted wife of 26 years, Bettie Chargin. Tony was a member of the Stockton Elks Lodge and the Stockton Golf & Country Club. Tony will be greatly missed by his family, dear friends including Bill and Lenore Dougherty, and Father Moore of Saint Berna dette's Catholic Church. He is survived by his daughter, Juliet Chargin Ashton of Crystal Bay, Nevada; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Linda Chargin of Menlo Park, California; grandchildren, Jean and Quigley Ashton, Marc and Kathryn Ashton, Anthony and Cheryl Chargin, Rachel Ashton and Joseph Chargin, Jeffrey Ashton and Katie Chargin; great-grandchildren, Harper, Delaney and Daisy Ashton. Devoted brother and sister-in-law, Robert and retired Judge Ann Chargin, and their son Nick Chargin. Devoted sister Evelyn Petrinovich and brother-in-law the late Jim Petrino vich, and their children Ronald and spouse Karen Petrinovich and Linda and spouse Marc Parkinson. Tony is also survived by grand nieces and nephews, and his devoted step sister and her husband, Helen and Anthony Greich and their family.
