Len held over 36 years of dedicated service with the United States Government. He served over 20 years in the United States Air Force, where he earned the Army Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Outstanding Unit Award and the Meritorious Service Medal, along with numerous other commendations. During 16 years in the United States Postal Service, he was presented with the Superior Accomplishment Award and two Special Achievement Awards, along with many letters of recognition and appreciation. Len was extremely pleased to be a member of the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, with 23 years, 11 months and 20 days of continuous sobriety. His daily dedication to the Big Book, the Twelve by Twelve and service to others, allowed him to become an inspiration to many members, and Len will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Len left this world with an acceptance and serenity that his life was in his Higher Power's hands. Due to his strong personal beliefs and the support of his loving wife, Len passed in the comforts of home, happy and at peace. As a family, we are devastated by his loss and hope only to be able to walk our lives attempting to hold the peace and unity he shared with us daily. Len is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Patricia Utterback; his children, Clay and Laura Utterback and Mark and Michelle Utterback, all of Stockton, CA and Drew and Barbie Utterback of Valley Springs, CA; his grandchildren, Alicia Straub, Marisa and Zoie Utterback, Mark Jr. and Amanda Utterback, Lance Utterback and Tanya and Heather Dirks; siblings, Lennette Hall of Sarasota, Florida, Lane and Dick Ahlers of Ontario, Canada, Ed and Carol Utterback and Guy and Beth Utterback of Jefferson, Township, Ohio and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Alano Club of Stockton, 1812 Mt. Diablo Avenue, Stockton on August 14, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests individuals make a donation in Len's name to either Hospice of San Joaquin or the Alano Club of Stockton.
