RANGERS IN MILITARY SERVICE 1823 - 1874:
Minuteman & Mounted Volunteer Units Frontier protection was often accomplished by groups of men organized into militia organizations. During the Mexican War, early statehood and the Civil War, Texas army Texas militia, C.S.A. and U.S. Army units were posted on the frontier. It is a confusing and often difficult task to determine whether an individual was a Ranger or a member of a "regular" Texas military unit. Sometimes, as in the Mexican War, Rangers were ordered into U.S. service. In the Civil War, whole Ranger units were drafted into the Confederate service.
