| This cemetery is located in the northeast part of Cooke County, Texas and is to the west of CR 127 a few miles north of the town of Walnut Bend near what is known as Horse Shoe Bend of the Red River. It is located on what used to be the Young Plantation. It is on leased government land and is only accessible with a key and the leaser's consent. The oldest readable marker is dated 1854. The most notable grave is that of Colonel William Cooke Young who was assassinated from ambush by an alleged member of the 'Union League'. This set off a wave of hysteria and revenge which would result in a total of 42 men being executed in what was to become known as 'The Great Hanging'. Young County, Texas was named by the Texas Legislature for Col. William Cooke Young. Latest Survey: Jack Nanny May 2003 |
