| Gloucester (Pronounced Glaw-ster) County was formed in 1651 from York County. In 1651, it consisted of Abingdon, Kingston, Petsworth, and Ware Parishes. Kingston Parish became Mathews County in 1791. Gloucester County was named for Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of Charles I. The county seat is Gloucester. |
